I recently performed a VFD conversion on my lathe that eliminated the need for the countershaft assembly and the associated Reeves sheaves. The belts and bearings were replaced in March 2026 and are like new. The Reeves sheaves are in great shape with sheave bushings only showing very slight wear. My lathe is the old style with the Reeves and slave cylinder facing the tailstock, so the countershaft is not compatible with lathes that have the Reeves on the left side of the lathe.
